CIRCULATION CLERK INFORMATION SHEET

Job Type: Full Time, Non-Exempt, 28-36 hours/week
Reports to: Director
Wages: $11.00 per hour
Benefits: PERF Retirement, Paid Holiday, Sick, Personal, and Vacation Leave


Position Description: Work involves responsibility for circulation desk functions using an automated circulation system, shelf maintenance, periodicals maintenance, basic library statistics, interlibrary loan coordination, and overdue book procedures. This position is also tasked with making routine library clerical decisions. The work requires that the employee have good knowledge, skill and ability in library clerical functions.  Requires a flexible schedule that includes day, night, and weekend hours with regular and punctual attendance. Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide excellent customer service to patrons of all backgrounds and ages.
  • Perform the full range of circulation desk procedures using an automated circulation system.
  • Assure accurate library shelving of books and periodicals by shelf reading and re-shelving, as necessary.
  • Compile a variety of statistics concerning library usage and book circulation and maintain library records.
  • Carry out interlibrary loan procedures for incoming and outgoing library materials.
  • Carry out overdue book recall procedures and figures, collect and record fees and fines.
  • Update lists of holding for acquisitions and discarded materials.
  • Perform routine repairs on books and other holdings.
  • Handle routine complaints and answer a variety of questions at the circulation desk.
  • Answer telephones and provide routine information or refer and transfer calls.
  • Assist patrons with all forms of library technology and computer programs.
  • Maintain periodical collection, as assigned.
  • Issue and renew library cards and maintain their related accounts.
  • Assist with library program preparation and implementation, as directed.
  • Maintain a welcoming and orderly appearance of the library, cleaning all areas as necessary
  • Assist other staff as needed.
  • Understand, implement, and enforce all library policies and procedures.
  • Inspect materials for damage and make recommendations for repair or withdrawal.
  • Perform other duties as assigned/required

  • Knowledge of current library practices.
  • Knowledge of computers, tablets, smart phones, e-mail, the Internet, office software, document imaging, etc.
  • Ability to learn computer programs or software and use them effectively to perform duties.
  • Skill in organizing and prioritizing multiple responsibilities within an assigned framework.
  • Ability to handle high volumes of work.
  • Ability to work with patrons in a friendly and tactful manner.
  • Skill in checking information for accuracy and completeness and correcting errors.
  • Ability to excel as a productive and positive team member.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive work culture that fosters excellent customer service and teamwork.
  • Pass a background check.

YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN INFORMATION SHEET


Job Type: Full Time, Non-Exempt,  28-36 hours/week
Reports to: Director
Wages: $12 - $13 per hour commensurate with qualifications
Benefits: PERF Retirement, Paid Holiday, Sick, Personal, and Vacation Leave

Position Description: The Youth Services Librarian is primarily responsible for providing services for children and teens along with their caregivers and educators, including creating programming activities, promoting literacy development, and offering general reference assistance and reader’s advisory.  This position requires a flexible schedule that includes day, night, and weekend hours with regular and punctual attendance. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Essential Job Duties:
  • Serves customers in Children’s and Teen’s Services and at Children’s Desk by providing reference assistance and reader’s advisory, locating materials and other resources, and assisting customers in using library catalog, computers, and other public equipment
  • Schedules, plans, markets, and presents programming for children and teens at the library and at community locations; plans and conducts the Summer Reading Program and special events
  • Participates in a variety of community activities and public speaking opportunities; provides positive image of library
  • Researches, makes contact and negotiates with potential program presenters and performers
  • Maintains a host of ongoing programs while introducing new programs and special events that respond to customer and community demand
  • Maintains reliable attendance; reports to work as scheduled and clocks in and out on time
  • Assists in keeping safe, orderly, and engaging environments in public service and staff areas
  • Helps maintain equipment and supplies within department
  • Attends conferences, workshops, and training relevant to professional development
  • Maintains records and statistics related to programming
  • Works closely with South Newton and other youth organizations to engage the youth community

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Preference given to background in Childhood Education or related field
  • Library experience preferred
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and form of transportation
  • Pass a background check
