english language learning

The Brook ELL Program is designed to empower Spanish-speaking adults with the English skills they need to overcome language barriers and succeed in their communities. This immersive program combines language instruction with practical, real-life skills to help participants thrive in personal, educational, and professional settings.

Program Highlights:
  • Class Structure: Two in-person classes are offered based on skill level—Beginner and Intermediate. Classes meet twice a week for two hours each, with additional homework to reinforce learning.
  • Curriculum: The program uses the Ventures 3rd Edition Basic Student's Book, focusing on language fundamentals, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Lessons also cover societal norms, math skills, American customs, and holidays to help students navigate daily life.
  • Additional Opportunities: Students receive real-world experiences via partnerships with local companies and organizations.
  • Community Engagement: Students participate in events like South Newton High School’s Noche Latina and Brook's annual Summer Kick-Off Picnic, fostering cultural exchange and community connections.

What to Expect as a Student:
  • Attend classes regularly and arrive on time.
  • Complete homework and study at home for at least 10–20 minutes daily.
  • Actively participate in class discussions and activities.
  • Communicate with instructors if you will miss a class or need help.
  • Regular testing and grades help track progress and provide feedback.

Program Impact:

Our students report increased confidence in speaking English, navigating public spaces, communicating with teachers and doctors, and even applying for jobs or promotions. Community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with local schools and families praising the program's impact.

How to Join:
The program runs annually from February through November. Registration is held in-person every January. Classes are free to participants, thanks to the generosity of donors and community support.

"I am totally grateful to everyone involved with this course. Thank you all for your time and patience overall. We have learned how to ask for help... make appointments... greet people. We have also learned how to simply not stay quiet. For this, I give you thanks for all of the little and big things I have learned. I can’t thank you enough. I say it from the heart.”
                                                                                                                                                  -   E.A. ,  student
“... Everything I have learned has helped me - from something as simple as answering a greeting to something as important as understanding instructions at work, making an appointment with the doctor, and being able to talk to him about my symptoms when I am sick... I sincerely want to thank you for your willingness and commitment [to the students] of this program.”
                                                                                                                                                - Edwin,   student

“I am very grateful... I have improved my grammar, listening, and have been losing the fear of speaking. As a goal I set myself to understand and speak [English] fluently enough to be able to travel and see new places in this beautiful country. Travel without fear that not understanding or speaking it might cause me problems.”
                                                                                                                                                     - Benito,   student

“...It’s even helping me with my son who speaks more English than Spanish...I am communicating with him more and understanding more in my work. Not speaking the language limits us from not getting better jobs because we don’t understand...from not being informed...from not participating in the community...”
                                                                                                                                            - Anonymous,   student
